Champawat district is making significant strides in rural development, introducing innovative practices and empowering local communities through various schemes. From pioneering women in fish farming to establishing modern processing units, Champawat is setting new benchmarks.
Best Practices (REAP)
- CBO-Based Enterprise – Fish Farming: The Siddh Baba SHG in Dhatigao, Barakot block, has established a fish farming enterprise with a project cost of ₹10 lakh, with REAP supporting ₹6 lakh. Traditionally, fish farming in hilly regions was done by men, but with project support, women have taken up this activity for the first time. They earned a profit of ₹2.5 lakh within six months, inspiring other groups to engage in income-generating activities.
Best Practices (NRLM)
- Iron Growth Centre: The Pragati Mahila Gram Sangathan in Lohaghat block has established an Iron Growth Centre with a project cost of ₹41.40 lakh (MSME: ₹22.31 lakh, USRLM: ₹9.59 lakh, Untied Fund: ₹4.50 lakh, MLA fund: ₹5.00 lakh). From FY 2020-21 to 2024-25, the women of the SHG have achieved a total sales turnover of ₹80.02 lakh, generating a net profit of ₹26.42 lakh.
- Integrated Farming with Homestay: Hema Upadhyay (Panchbalia SHG) in Lohaghat block has established an integrated farming and homestay project with a cost of ₹35.55 lakh (CIF: ₹0.55 lakh from NRLM, ₹5.00 lakh interest-free loan, Tourism Department: ₹30.00 lakh for homestay construction). The homestay features traditional local cuisine and a yoga-meditation room. It generates a monthly income of ₹35,000 to ₹40,000 through bookings from platforms like Booking.com, social media, and personal contacts.
Best Practices (MGNREGS)
- Bio-Gas Plant Construction: In FY 2024-25, 20 bio-gas plants were constructed, each costing ₹0.52 lakh (MGNREGA share: ₹0.42 lakh, beneficiary share: ₹0.10 lakh). Lakshmi Devi from Bastiya village, Champawat block, is one of the beneficiaries.
Best Practices (MBADP)
- Modern Surgical Unit in Veterinary Hospital: A modern surgical unit with an OT room and ultrasound machine has been established in the Government Veterinary Hospital, Lohaghat block, at a cost of ₹12 lakh. This unit is implemented by the Animal Husbandry Department, Champawat.
Proposed Game Changer Schemes (FY 2025-26)
- Pirul (Pine Needles) Briquettes Unit: Aiming to reduce deforestation, improve air quality, and provide economic benefits, a pilot Pirul briquettes unit was established in Bhingrada village, Pati block. 73 members from 9 SHGs of Ujjwala Gram Sangathan were encouraged to set up Pirul collection and briquette units. UCOST and IIP Dehradun organized training and demonstrations. From April to June 2024, 73 women collected and sold 190 quintals of Pirul at ₹5.00 per kg, earning ₹95,000. The briquettes will initially be sold to IIP Dehradun, and after one year, the unit will be handed over to the village organization. A plan to produce 1 ton per day is underway, which is expected to increase each woman’s livelihood by ₹3,500 to ₹4,500 per month.

- Munj Craft Making: The Parwati VO in Bamanpuri village, Champawat block, is engaged in Munj craft making with a cost of ₹1 lakh. Members earn a monthly income of ₹6,000 to ₹8,000.
- Jute Bag Manufacturing: The Isht Devta SHG in Rikholi village, Pati block, is manufacturing jute bags with a cost of ₹1.5 lakh. Members earn a monthly income of ₹10,000 to ₹12,000.

- Kirtika Makeover (Individual Enterprise): Located in Dhakna Badola village, Champawat block, this beauty parlor was established in 2024 with a project cost of ₹1 lakh and REAP support of ₹30,000. It generates a monthly income of ₹8,000 to ₹10,000.
- Individual Enterprise (Stitching): In Kamlekh village, Pati block, an individual enterprise (stitching) was established in 2024 with a project cost of ₹1 lakh and REAP support of ₹30,000. It generates a monthly income of ₹5,000 to ₹7,500.

- Chain Link Fencing: Construction of chain link fencing in Chauramehta village, Pati block, was completed in FY 2024-25 at a total cost of ₹6.00 lakh (MGNREGA: ₹3.25 lakh, Untied fund: ₹2.75 lakh).
- Mulberry Plantation: Mulberry plantation and maintenance work in Beraore village, Barakot block, was completed in FY 2024-25 at a total cost of ₹4.06 lakh (MGNREGA: ₹3.09 lakh, Department: ₹0.97 lakh). This benefited 30 farmers over 2.00 hectares.

- Road Construction (Punakot to Shivalay): This road in Pati block was constructed in FY 2021-22 at a cost of ₹69.38 lakh.
- Road Construction (Alli to Dungajoshi): This road in Barakot block was constructed in FY 2021-22 at a cost of ₹69.49 lakh.

- Banku to Sulla-Pasam Motor Road: This road in Lohaghat block was completed on 05.06.2023 at a total cost of ₹880.67 lakh.
- Taknagunth to Danda Malla Motor Road: This road in Champawat block is currently in progress, with a total cost of ₹836.41 lakh.

- Housing for Beneficiaries: Anil Ram from Lohaghat block received housing in FY 2022-23 at a cost of ₹1.30 lakh. Bhuwaneshwari Devi from Lohaghat block received housing in FY 2023-24 at a cost of ₹1.30 lakh. Chandan Ram from Aina, Dwarahat block, received housing in FY 2022-23. Beena Devi from Malli Riyuni, Dwarahat block, also received housing in FY 2022-23.

- Training Programs: GST Regulatory and Registration Training was held at Vikas Bhawan, Champawat. A Lakhpati Didis need assessment program was conducted at the Block Office, Lohaghat.

- Mushroom Production Training: A 5-day training on Mushroom Production and distribution of compost manure was conducted in Champawat block in FY 2022-23 with a project cost of ₹1 lakh, implemented by the Horticulture Department.

- Water Harvesting Tanks: Nityanand from Chandrakot village, Pati block, benefited from a water harvesting tank in FY 2021-22 at a cost of ₹0.75 lakh. Bhairav Dutt from Binwalgaon village, Pati block, also benefited from a water harvesting tank in FY 2021-22 at a cost of ₹0.75 lakh.
